Checklist for Creating Your First Music Release

A simple checklist to help you prepare your first music release and avoid delays or store rejections.

Updated this week

Releasing your first song is an exciting milestone but before you hit distribute, it’s important to make sure everything is prepared correctly.

A well-prepared release helps avoid delays, rejections from stores, and metadata issues down the line.

Use the checklist below to ensure your first release is ready for distribution.

1. Cover Artwork Requirements

Your cover art is often the first impression listeners will have of your music, so quality and compliance are essential.

Make sure your artwork meets the following standards:

  • Minimum size: 2000 x 2000 pixels

  • Aspect ratio: Must be a perfect square (1:1)

  • Quality: High-resolution, clear, and not blurry or pixelated

Artwork content rules:

  • Only include text that is directly related to the release, such as:

    • Artist name

    • Release title

  • Do not include:

    • Famous people or celebrity images (unless you have explicit rights)

    • Barcodes, QR codes, or store logos

    • Promotional phrases like “New Single,” “Out Now,” or pricing information

Keeping your artwork clean and compliant ensures it will be accepted across all major stores.

2. Audio File Preparation

Your audio quality plays a huge role in how your music sounds on streaming platforms.

Audio format requirements:

  • File type: WAV (recommended for best quality)

  • Final master only: No demos or rough mixes

Audio quality checks:

  • Ensure your track does not contain long silences

    • No empty intros or outros longer than 5 seconds

  • The audio should start and end naturally, without accidental dead space

Samples & AI-generated content:

We do accept tracks created using samples or AI, but transparency is required:

  • Any use of third-party samples or AI tools must be disclosed during distribution

  • This information is critical because:

    • Some stores do not allow certain types of sampled or AI-generated content

    • We must comply with each store’s individual content policies

Failure to disclose this information can lead to store takedowns or rejections, so accuracy is key.

3. Contributor & Credits Accuracy

Correctly listing contributors is just as important as the audio and artwork.

Before submitting your release, ensure:

  • All contributors are listed (artists, producers, writers, etc.)

  • Each contributor’s role is assigned correctly, such as:

    • Primary Artist

    • Featured Artist

    • Producer

    • Songwriter / Composer

Accurate credits help:

  • Ensure proper royalty allocation

  • Avoid disputes or corrections after release

  • Maintain professional industry standards

🎯 Final Thoughts

Taking the time to review this checklist before submitting your first release can save you time, stress, and potential rejections. When your artwork, audio, and credits are all in order, your release has the best chance of going live smoothly across all platforms.
